New GPShopper / comScore Survey Reveals Mobile Shopping Behavior of 1100+ Consumers

Posted by Bill Siwicki on Oct 28, 2015 9:55:11 AM

Nearly two thirds of mobile shoppers have three or more shopping apps on their phones, about four out of five mobile shoppers use at least one or two shopping apps monthly, and three out of four mobile shoppers have their favorite retailer's mobile app on their phones, according to the new 2015 GPShopper/comScore Mobile Shopping and Payments Survey.

I just debuted results of the survey this morning here in Las Vegas where more than 10,000 industry professionals have gathered for the 2015 Money20/20 Conference. During my session, entitled "The Smartphone, Mobile Payments and Mobile Shopping Apps," I offered the 900 session attendees the first look at this new survey from GPShopper, conducted by prominent digital measurement firm comScore Inc. ComScore surveyed 1,189 U.S. adults who shop on smartphones. Here's a look at some of the numbers.

Nearly two thirds of mobile shoppers have three or more shopping apps on their phones, the GPShopper/comScore survey finds. In detail:

  • 23% have 1 or 2 shopping apps.
  • 26% have 3 to 5 shopping apps.
  • 18% have 6 to 10 shopping apps.
  • 11% have 11 to 25 shopping apps.
  • 7% have more than 25 shopping apps.
  • 1% were not sure.
  • 87% of mobile shoppers use mobile shopping apps, the survey finds.

Gamifying mobile marketing to drive shoppers into stores

With its mobile app, Shoe Carnival is literally turning shopping into a carnival. The 400-store family footwear retailer has taken their iconic Wheel of Savings from its stores and recreated it in its app. That mobile wheel is helping roll customers into stores.

In stores, an emcee wanders, occasionally letting customers ready to checkout spin the wheel to see if they can win special savings. The wheel might land on additional dollar amount off any purchase, for example. And that’s precisely what they get as they checkout.

Shoe Carnival shoppers in the mobile app—available for Apple iOS and Android devices—can spin the colorful mobile wheel themselves once a day to see if they can save big. They may be at home, in the office, or even in or near a Shoe Carnival store.

Digital movie ticket seller Fandango surprised the heck out of me yesterday when I purchased tickets to see "Terminator Genisys." Then I remembered, Ah yes, Fandango, the business that's always out there ahead of the pack in mobile commerce and mobile marketing. Makes sense.

On Monday Night Football in the '70s, ABC used to mix in with commercials this 2-minute-ish featurette about questionable plays called "You Make the Call!" Why I remember this, I don't know--especially since I haven't watched football since the '70s. Maybe they still do it.

I bought a new pair of shoes today. And when I was done, I thought it would be a fun puzzler to ask you this question: Who gets the credit for this sale? You make the call! Here we go:

Why Savvy Retailers Choose Deep Linking

Retailers with mobile apps that are thinking ahead of the curve have been deep linking e-mail messages, search results and mobile ads to their apps. Deep linking detects when a mobile device user has the app of a retailer or other business on her smartphone or tablet and instead of linking that user to the mobile website or responsive design site—the most common practice—reroutes the user directly into the mobile app.
