Brands to Watch in 2017

As we turn our attention to a new year there are several brands I’ll be keeping a close eye on in 2017. From fast fashion and beauty to athleisure and accessories, these companies are leveraging digital with a mobile focus to reach their fans wherever they are.

Fast Fashion

If there’s one thing I know, it’s that fast fashion is here to stay. Speaking of fast fashion, boohoo is quickly becoming an industry leader. The UK-based retailer has grown quite rapidly and is giving its competitors a run for their money by offering affordable yet quality fashion. Boohoo clearly understands its consumer, and continues to push boundaries by adding additional brands to its portfolio, offering targeted promotions, expanding internationally and engaging with its customers on a daily basis via social media. Per recent news, boohoo is also expected to acquire Nasty Gal for $20 million. In a world where most retailers are shuttering stores and filing for bankruptcy, boohoo has been on an upward trend and reported a 47% increase in total sales. Its strong digital presence and consumer app has contributed to their extremely loyal customer base - a whopping 5.1 million active users!

Beauty App Must-Haves for the Millennial Shopper

Hi Beauty Brands, I’m Jocelyn Schoolsky, and I am your customer - a professional millennial female wanting to feel and look her best. 

Outside of work, I’m most passionate about the beauty industry. Not only do I have several close friends that work as makeup artists but I also spend countless hours watching YouTuber’s like Desi Perkins, Huda Beauty, Jaclyn Hill, Carli Bybel, LustreLux, and Kandee Johnson. In addition to YouTube, I also research products via beauty blogs, MakeupAlley and Snapchat. And guess what? I’m not the only one! There are millions of women just like me that do the exact same thing. 

I want you to build me an app, and I’d like to share why you should do it and how to make it great!

Millennials spend more than 3 hours a day on their mobile phone. Millennials also love shopping apps. And for the first time ever, mobile apps are outpacing mobile web commerce. Before you know it, apps will outpace desktop. If one of my favorite brands has an app, I am far more likely to shop with them. Why is that you ask? That app is at the forefront of my device and always top of mind and I expect to be treated like a VIP for having it.

App of the Week: Nordstrom

Aside from Amazon, I find myself using  Nordstrom's app most often. And unless you’ve been living under a rock, you're likely familiar with the 115 year old retail chain. So why bother downloading the app? 

Well, I’ll tell you why...

  1. I’m a Millennial. I love a good bargain. Nordstrom price matches. Meaning, if a competitor is running a sale, they will honor the price. Just type “Priced Matched” in the app’s search bar and you’ll find a lengthy list of discounted items.

  2. If you are a Nordstrom cardholder like myself, you can manage your points and rewards from within the app. Save a tree and redeem your Nordstrom Notes digitally. It’s great to see exactly how many points I have and how close I am to my next $20.00 reward. 

  3. Need some inspo on the go? Take a quick peak at Nordstrom’s Style blog. The content is great and very accessible in-app. On the flip side, their Instagram: Through Our Eyes feed is not shoppable. Bummer!

App of the Week: Revolve Clothing

I have a love/hate relationship with the Revolve app.

Let me start off by saying that this is one of my favorite shopping apps in the market. And my God, there’s a whole lot to love.

First and foremost, Revolve has done an incredible job with shoppable content. As a millennial, more than half of my purchases are influenced by fashion bloggers and the #REVOLVEME section is the perfect place for inspiration.

Another simple feature that retailers often make difficult is the ‘Favorites’ section of the app. Often times, I favorite any item that catches my eye and either wait for it to go on sale or have the occasional splurge. In the Revolve app, the Favorite function is readily available on the product detail page, and I can access my saved Favorites easily at any time by clicking on the navigation bar.

Who doesn’t love a beautiful pair of handcrafted shoes from Italy? Similar to EverlaneM. Gemi is employing small family owned factories to craft their luxury footwear for a fraction of the typical retailer cost. Quality at a price I can afford – what’s better than that?

 

2. Carbon38 

Yoga pants galore! Carbon38 believes in fashionable sportswear for the modern, active woman. After all, gym-wear is the new streetwear so expect to see their brands both in and out of the gym.
