Gabriel Farrell, GPShopper's Senior Vice President of Technology, will be speaking at this week's Digital Irish event in New York City, which will showcase companies that are "making waves in the ‘Internet of Things’ space."

A member of GPShopper’s founding team, Gabriel has over 15 years of experience in product development and operations. After received his degree from University College Dublin, he moved to US to attend graduate school at Creighton University. Gabriel caught the startup bug during web 1.0, moved to San Francisco and worked as a developer for companies focused on bringing the web to education (iMind and ‘The Education Network’). Before joining GPShopper in 2005 he led development for, a National Science Foundation sponsored project.

Target Tests Beacons to Improve In-Store Shopping Experience

Target has just become one of the largest retailers to test a technology known as beacons, which are small transmitters placed above a shelf that send signals a short distance. The beacons link to shoppers’ smartphones through the Target app, sending them relevant coupons, deals and product recommendations based on where they are in the store.

The experiment is Target’s first major foray into beacons, starting with 50 stores in markets such as Denver, Chicago, Seattle and San Francisco as well as in 15 stores in the Twin Cities.

Beacons are a mobile marketing technology poised to transform the way consumers shop in stores and the ways stores market to and interact with their customers.

Push notifications triggered by beacons — tiny store-based transmitters that communicate with retailers’ mobile apps on consumers’ smartphones via Bluetooth Low Energy wireless technology — will influence $4.1 billion in U.S. retail sales at the top 100 retailers in 2015, mobile technology research firm BI Intelligence estimates. The firm predicts that number will soar to $44.4 billion in 2016 as use of beacons increases and merchants begin to formulate actual mobile in-store strategies.
